Escape Plan (2013) Movie Review

Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in a film that's far less self-parodying than their Expendables team-ups. This action thriller, directed by 1408's Mikael Hafstrom, stars Stallone as Ray Breslin, the world's foremost expert on prison breaks.

He works for a pricy security firm that tests how escape-proof maximum security prisons are by inserting Ray into the inmate population using an alias and he must then find a way to break out. The CIA come to Ray and his boss (Vincent D’Onofrio) and colleagues (Amy Ryan and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who plays a master hacker -- seriously) with a job worth twice his usual multi-million dollar fee.

The world's governments are handing over their most dangerous, undesirable criminals without trial to a privately owned, off the books ultra-secure penitentiary, which we'll come to know is called The Tomb. Not wanting terrorists, drug lords or mass murderers to be able to escape, the CIA hires Ray to go undercover into the prison and find a way to escape.

Quicker than you can say "double cross," Ray realizes he's been set-up and is now trapped in The Tomb. Ray gets help from fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to devise an escape plan before the sinister Warden Hobbes (Jim Caviezel) can finally break him. If you go into Escape Plan with reasonable to low expectations, you might be pleasantly surprised with what you find here. While it certainly has its fair share of cheesy and dumb moments, Escape Plan largely works as escapist (pun intended) fare.
